Cities that never sleep

For all those who work odd hours

You’ve probably heard people say that New York or Las Vegas are cities that never sleep…well, I discovered something quite interesting a few months ago :P … San Jose (CR) is a city that never sleeps!…yes, you read that right, that San Jose that you pass by every day (or have passed by at some point) is a city that never sleeps…but it’s hard to notice.

Because while people with “normal” hours (like from 8am to 5pm) go to bed, there are thousands of workers who are starting their “day” of work…

If you feel like you’re waking up early at 6:00am (just waking up, opening your eyes, still no shower, no breakfast) think about the guy who delivers your newspaper or the baker who made the bread you’re going to eat for breakfast or the taxi driver who has been working since 3:00 am!!! or why not??? the IT guy who started working at 11:00 pm…they woke up much earlier than us (or they’re just about to go to bed…)

I was one of those for a while, I used to wake up at 4:00am and that’s how I learned to admire them a lot (I couldn’t handle it anymore). It’s a lot of effort they make to earn their food, it’s difficult to wake up and have no sun! To leave the house and not be able to know if it’s going to be a beautiful sunny day or a day to freeze to death, because there’s still no light or heat.

You have to go to bed early, unless you have a super powerful body that can function on very little sleep (which is not my case)…in short, the whole routine is upside down, it’s difficult to see friends or family because when you work they’re sleeping, when you finish work they’re working and when they finish work you’re about to go to bed :( … the only thing that makes things worse is if you have to work on Sundays :(

The day when everyone sleeps in late, has a late breakfast or has breakfast and lunch in one, with the newspaper, then goes to the cinema, has nice dinners…in short, rests and you can’t…and even if you want to do things after work you’re tired…and it’s not the same.

This is just a small idea of this not so common but not so rare situation…

As I said, I’ve learned to admire these people…and I invite you to try to be kind to them, especially those who work in the places you go to in your free time, for them those places are not fun, it’s their job!

They may be a bit grumpy but we’re also sometimes a bit grumpy at our job…they’re not in their free time and they’re working so that other people can enjoy their free time more…so smile and try to be kind :)

P.S. La Nacion “stole” my idea :P and wrote an article about night workers so if you want to read some facts here’s the link
