The story of the ugly girl
I hate stories about “ugly” people where at the end of the story they get a total makeover, they change even their teeth if possible, and that’s where they declare her successful, victorious, beats the cheerleader (if not taking her place) and ends up with the hunk.
Well, as far as I’m concerned, screw all those who believe that you need a pretty face for a beautiful life… all those who invent ugly characters just to turn them into runway models… all those who think that the shell we wear on the outside defines us and gives us a place.
The truth is, there’s nothing wrong with not setting foot in a beauty salon and spending the day at the library or reading whatever we come across. There’s nothing wrong with not dating the most popular guy, wearing glasses, braces, orthopedic shoes… there’s definitely nothing wrong with understanding as soon as possible that the outside is fleeting, that eventually it will stop being attractive and only what’s inside will remain… there’s nothing wrong with learning to see beyond.
And seeing beyond is an advantage that is sometimes very difficult to find, perhaps because of all the time spent thinking about how we’ll look tomorrow or how to remove years… but of course, a mind makeover is very difficult to do in a movie.
This is the story of a teenager who lived with the label of “Betty the Ugly” on her forehead, with glasses, braces, a muffled laugh, and of course, the nerdy girl who studies couldn’t be missing… and you know what… this is a story about that Betty… a story that doesn’t involve a makeover, not even a bit of makeup.
Everything she studied has served her well, it has opened many doors for her and has helped her to see the details of life, the hidden stories that make the world go round, she takes risks in her work and hasn’t had to wear miniskirts to stand out, she has her own hunk, still wears glasses and jeans, and still reads like a library rat… it’s much more than can be said for the stories of many cheerleader-type girls… so once again, screw all those who believe that an ugly person cannot be happy :)
