Presidenta!

Maybe by pure chance I have been part of groups where the gender dynamics are very interesting and the truth is that in both cases it seems to be very advantageous to be a male individual.

I have heard professors say “I don’t do favors for women” in response to identical requests granted only to men, I have heard individuals admit a preference for men because they are the minority, I have heard that I have to be careful not to be too “flirtatious”, “feminine”, or anything that resembles it since I work in a male-dominated environment and that can be seen in a bad way… now I heard that now that we have a woman president there can be women managers and positions of power… as if it wasn’t possible before.

The truth is that I’m not so sure how sincere the vote of Costa Ricans for a woman was, it seems that in reality, as many say, they believe that she is just a mask and in the end, we will continue to follow the steps of men and that is why they voted for her.

But I hope that, even if it is only on paper, we begin to realize the equality of conditions that women have, that it is not strange for a woman to be the boss (and not in a kitchen or in a store), that we have the same ability to be CEOs or whatever position is necessary, that we do not have to change the way we shake hands to not look weak, that a tear looks as moving in a male boss who has to lay off employees as in a female entrepreneur who has to make difficult decisions.

I hope we start using reason and truly give ourselves equal opportunities… there will always be differences in how we think, how we act, how we approach problems… they are there… they cannot be denied… hopefully, we realize that despite those differences, both tactics lead us to winning places… hopefully, more doors will not be closed, more opportunities will not be denied because of the little difference between an X and a Y.
